Indie Designers Q&A: AbiGoLucky

Published on: November 1, 2022

Meet AbiGoLucky, one of the amazingly talented independent designers creating beautiful cards for you to surprise your friends and family with! Abigail (or Abi) is the creative mind and illustrator behind AbiGoLucky, and we’re excited to dive in and learn more about what inspires Abi when creating the cards you know and love!

Introduce yourself…

Hello, I’m Abi. I’m originally from Margate, Kent but now I work as a freelancer from my converted campervan, travelling the world. In 2017, after working 9-5 in a job I did not enjoy for many years, I decided that I wanted more out of life, so set out teaching myself Graphic Design and illustration – something I was always interested in, but never pursued. After creating a full time wage for myself as a freelancer, I then set off travelling with my partner, Faye and we spent a year working remotely in South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Once back in the UK, we had caught the travel bug and did not want to go back to regular routine life, so we bought a van, converted it into our home and set off again ready to see the UK and Europe. That brings me to now, living my absolute dream of travelling the world in my little house on wheels, whilst doing a job I absolutely love!

Is it difficult to work and travel at the same time? What challenges do you face?

The only problem with working and travelling is being strict with my time management, making sure I don’t get too distracted. When I’m in a beautiful place, sometimes my brain will go into holiday mode, wanting to just kick back and crack open a cold beer.. however I have to remain focused, knowing that, that’s the reason I’m there in the first place… oh, and WiFi!

Describe your typical work day…

Once I have packed up the bed, and enjoyed a nice cuppa outside, I then get browsing media/news to see what’s happening in the world, ready to jump on any trends. I spend a little time teaching myself new techniques where I can, and I’m constantly brainstorming new ideas for cards. Once I’m done with the day, I then go for a wonder and watch the sunset, putting my brain to rest.

What sort of cards do you love to design?

The best medicine in life is laughter, so I absolutely love designing funny cards!

What made you decide to live and work in a van?

Well, I’m a pretty minimal person, so small spaces didn’t faze me. I absolutely love freedom, and let’s face it… you can’t get much free-er than being able to move your house to anywhere you like, and I’m absolutely all about the outdoors. I definitely have more inspiration when I’m in nature and surrounded by beautiful views.

How did you decide to quit your day job and do this?

I got myself into a position where I could support myself financially and then just quit! Which was a very scary, yet exciting time. I think that sometimes in life, you have to take risks to get to where you want to be.

What or who inspires your work?

I love, love, love colour! One of my previous jobs was working for a furniture designer, screen printing bright colours and patterns onto upcycled, mid century furniture – this really kick started my relationship with surface design.
