Funky Pigeon ‘Sealed’ 2021: The most generous people and places in the UK
Last updated: July 24th, 2024 Published on: December 20, 2021Whether you’ve spent a small fortune on a knockout present or simply made something yourself, there are few better feelings than knowing you’ve got the perfect gift for those nearest and dearest to you.
Here at Funky Pigeon, we receive thousands of orders for cards and gifts every day, so as 2021 draws to a close we thought we’d take a deep dive into people’s buying habits to reveal some interesting facts.
Having analysed more than eight million orders we’ve discovered where in the UK the most generous people live and which friend you’re most likely to receive a gift from.
So if you’re ever in two minds about whether you should (or shouldn’t) buy someone a Christmas card, birthday card or gift for an upcoming occasion, then this may just help to make up your mind.
People named Sarah are the most generous
If you’ve got a friend called Sarah then you’re in luck because the chances are you’ll be receiving something special the next time you’ve got something to celebrate. People named Sarah not only sent the most cards in 2021 but also bought the most gifts as well. Perhaps rather fittingly, in Arabic Sarah means ‘joy’ or ‘delight’ – emotions which are familiar to all of us after opening that special present.
There’s no need to panic if you don’t know anybody called Sarah though as those named Emma, Laura, Claire and Lisa also rank in the top five for gift and card-givers.

1) Sarah
2) Emma
3) Laura
4) Claire
5) Lisa
With females taking the top five spots it may come as little surprise to discover women were found to be more generous than men… You better up your game lads!
Those living in Midlothian spent the most on presents… and cards
Our analysis revealed where people live also has a considerable impact on how thoughtful they are. It’s great news for any of us with friends or family north of the border because three out of the top six most generous places in the UK are in Scotland.
Having crunched the numbers we discovered those living in Midlothian have spent the most on cards and gifts per person this year. While the historic Scottish county just south of Edinburgh may have a population size of less than 100,000 people it’s clear to see residents are keen to impress.
It’s not all doom and gloom for those of us with mates in England though as Essex, Lancashire and Kent all ranked in the top four most generous places in the UK.
If you’ve got a friend or relative living in Angus, Aberdeenshire, Surrey or Wiltshire you can also anticipate a delivery the next time a notable occasion comes along with our analysis placing residents in these counties within the top eight also.

At the opposite end of the scale, it’s bad news for those with friends in either the English or Welsh capitals as people from London and Cardiff were found to be amongst some of the least generous card and gift-givers.
Overall those from the Scottish council area of Perth & Kinross spent the least per person on gifts and cards last year followed by those living in London.
