Introduce yourself…
Hello, I’m Daksha Giri, an illustrator and lettering artist from India. I’ve been a self-taught creator since 5 years. I primarily sell my greeting card designs to various companies and needless to say, since childhood, I’ve had a knack for making handmade cards for loved ones. My art is colorful, floral and whimsical. Being authentic is my core value and I love sharing that to the world through my artistic journey. If I’m not making art, I’m either learning new skills, watching videos or reading! As an introvert, I’m living my best life.
Describe your typical work day…
Waking up and doing the morning stuff, making a to-do list, doing client or personal work until lunch, lunch break and afternoon chill time begins, getting back to work by evening and done by 7pm! The schedule changes according to seasons.
What sort of cards do you love to design?
I love designing cards that have a quirky message, bold lettering and illustrations. I love florals so I don’t lose a chance to add them if I get a chance!
What are your favourite cards that you’ve designed and why?
Each card that I invest my mind and time in is my favorite. The most important thing while card making is creative freedom, and I’ve been blessed enough with clients who allow me to do so. Also, seeing cards in real life and thinking that an artwork I made on my iPad has manifested into a greeting card in someone else’s life is always a heartwarming thing to me!
How did you get into greeting card design?
It was a forgotten hobby until I actively came across a job posting that motivated me to give it a shot. I got selected and one after another, I acquired cool clients (like Funky Pigeon) and I’ve never looked back!
What’s your creative process?
I search for inspiration online once I’m done having a rough idea. After a concrete idea is set, I finalize the sketch, color it and tada! Takes me an average of 2 hours to make a piece. Being able to produce something unique motivates me to create.
Who or what inspires your work?
Adding to my last answer, any kind of art online can spark inspiration. To name someone specific would be unfair on the thousands of random artists who have never failed to spark an idea in me! To be specific, artists from my field who’ve been doing this longer than I’ve been doing are always an inspiration.
What are the challenges you face as an independent artist? And the joys?
Challenges can come and go like dark clouds and mostly they include comparison and having inconsistent periods of income. But I try to bring myself back to realizing how far I’ve come. Being able to work from home as an introvert and having a flexible schedule is definitely my peak joy!
What do you like to do outside of work?
I like to write blogs or little poems, read books, learn skills in and outside my career and relax by watching videos of my favorite creators on YouTube!
